POWERS & DAMPENING

MEDIUMSHIP Klaus is able to communicate with spirits, but uses drugs and alcohol to dampen his powers for a whole host of reasons — his power results in him being constantly hounded by the dead asking for help, and he's frankly kind of afraid of them.

EVOCATION Klaus is able to manifest the spirits he communicates with in the real world, although currently this ability is only in its nascent stages. At his current canon point, by staying sober he was able to physically interact with his brother Ben, and very briefly channel him and conjure him into the real world.

DAMPENING Whenever Klaus attempts to use his powers in the fog layer, he's hit with symptoms equivalent to withdrawing cold turkey from alcohol, the severity of which is dependent on what he's trying to do with the powers and how long he's using them for. Potentially, he'll be able to contact temporarily dead player characters in future.

SUBCONSCIOUS THEMES & FEARS

Klaus has a strong dose of claustrophobia thanks to being locked in a mausoleum for hours at a time by his emotionally abusive father. These experiences as a child have distinctly coloured how he views his powers, with a perhaps unhealthy amount of fear attached to his ability to contact and speak to the dead.

Addiction is a pretty strong theme with Klaus — he intentionally cultivates bad, unhealthy and even downright dangerous habits to separate himself from his power. He's also a habitual backslider who has problems making significant, permanent changes in his own life because he's more comfortable with the status quo. He's attempted sobriety several times, but it never seems to stick.

Klaus is also typified by a staunch refusal to address any of his numerous issues, from the abuse he experienced as a child, to the PTSD he developed as a result of fighting in the Vietnam War (it's a long story, okay).
